![]() At this minute,keyboards are hard at work trying to replicate the next post-apocalyptic saga of teens pitted against each other. A few years ago everybody wanted to write the next series of books about young vampires in love. It may be in poor taste to mention so early,but this book would just sing as an animated motion picture. ![]() If you're tired of the usual young adult fare,"The Coal Elf" has just enough bells and whistles to get and keep your attention. ![]() For those who think:"Fantasy's not my thing." Don't worry there's more than enough good old fashioned strytelling to make this book worth your while. Another incredible feat is the way the author creates a whole culture of characters (elves) and then subdivides them by class,job,and mannerism and then gets you to care about them. It's not like any other world I've ever read about and for me it is the star. DeVivo has created a world that lives and breathes with the odd characters,creatures,and even diseases that she has stocked it with. Now,I'd like to mention the things that make DeVivo's debut a knock-out. ![]() ![]() These are the kinds of things you'd expect to find in any well-written novel. Maria DeVivo has done some great work here she's created a young adult novel that has well developed characters,a touch of romance,and a thinly disguised message for the "everybody gets a trophy" generation. ![]()
